In this lecture, Lui Albaek Thomsen will present an overview of the use of VR/AR in mathematics education. VR/AR presents unique opportunities for interacting with mathematical concepts represented in virtual environments, which can support students’ learning by providing them concrete experiences with abstract concepts. Therefore, Lui will outline and discuss the state-of-the-art frameworks for understanding VR/AR’s role in learning goals of mathematics education, didactic considerations on VR/AR as a teaching tool, and opportunities for integrating VR into the classroom using collaborative and asymmetric configurations.
Lui Albaek Thomsen
Lui Albaek Thomsen is an Industrial PhD student in the Multisensory Experience Lab at Aalborg University Copenhagen. During his time as a bachelor student in Medialogy (2011 – 2014) and master student in Sound & Music Computing (2015 – 2017), Lui has been involved with several research projects on haptic feedback, spatial audio, musical interaction, and physics-based sound synthesis for VR. Currently, Lui is investigating the use of VR in mathematics education in a collaboration between the Multisensory Experience Lab and Edulab, the company behind the elearning platform (Matematikfessor.dk) used in Danish primary school mathematics education.
