Field Ethics in the Modern Age

Many countries now mandate “ethics committees” that decide on the appropriateness of research. This can be a practical problem for anthropologists, whose research is often unpredictable and therefore not easily subjected to the bureaucratic requirements of these procedures. We will examine some possible models and solutions, and suggest how these might also indicate something of the nature of anthropology’s future role in the world.
