Despite China being a country with the most visually impaired people in the world, the provision of audio description (AD) services and their academic research is far less developed than in Europe, Oceania and North America, where AD has a longer tradition and is subject to legislation. It is also true that over the last fifteen years the AD practice has made tremendous headway in China’s mainland. This talk will contextualize the burgeoning AD research in the changing landscape of AD practice in mainland and track the latest developments of AD research so as to present a more comprehensive picture of AD in the Chinese speaking world.

Professor XIAO Weiqing is a PhD Advisor of Translation Studies at Shanghai International Studies University. She is also Chair of the Department of Translation and Interpreting. She is a former Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (2010-2011). Her research interests are audiovisual translation and T&I teaching. Her recent publications include “A New Blueprint for Constructing Undergraduate Degree Programs in Translation and Interpreting with Chinese Characteristics” (Chinese Translators Journal, 2021, No.2), “Mapping Pedagogy-oriented Translation Technology Research (2000-2020)” (Foreign Languages World, 2021, No.1) and A Practical Guide to English-Chinese AVT (East China University of Science and Technology Press, 2017). She has given presentations on AVT studies and T&I pedagogy at conferences, seminars, and similar events held in China, UK, US and New Zealand. She is also a prolific translator of 12 books.
