语言从“无”发展到“有”的这个问题,可以从两个角度研究:一是群体演化(phylogeny),即从人类演化的角度探讨语言如何从几百万年前涌现。二是个体演化(ontogeny),即从个体的发展的角度,探索从胎儿习得语言到老年语言消失。本次报告第一场主要是讨论语言的群体演化,包括人类的涌现跟许多相关其他动物的演化关系。第二场从个体演化的角度,讨论婴儿的语言习得、成人的外语学习以及晚年语言的障碍或消失,也会提到人类老化的迫切问题。
