This lecture will explore the development of the European idea of dramaturgy and its influence on contemporary theatre and performance practices. Dramaturgy will be discussed as an ‘operating system’ for the contemporary theatre and a bridge between an idea that inspires an artwork and its realization through artistic expression. In other words, dramaturgy is seen in this lecture as a way to think about how the meaning and experience of theatre is made from theatre’s materials and processes. Theatre research that is informed by dramaturgy is therefore better able to link processes of creativity with performance analysis. Dramaturgy opens new pathways of reading theatre and discussing theatre in its variety of contexts. The lecture will discuss the importance of ‘new dramaturgy’ in these developments and will consider examples of performance that exemplify ‘new dramaturgical’ trends such as: new media, hybridity and anti-theatricality.
