Although the name of utopia goes back to Thomas Moore, the genre, or its typical way of thinking seems an important tradition of western culture, which produced several important works and branches through the centuries. The lecture follows the tradition from the origins to nineteenth-century utopian novel to twentieth-century dystopias and to contemporary science fiction to see how the fantasy-created possible (and many times impossible) world becomes a carrier of social criticism. It is a returning problem if pure utopias without dystopian features can ever be written.

The lecture will consider how adoption by writers belonging ethnic or religious minorities of the language of the majority culture can help them sharpen their criticism of the minority whose experience they depict by blurring the distinction between insider and outsider in the reader's mind. She would compare examples from some of Roth's works about American Jews with others from works by Palestinian Arab writers who use Hebrew as a vehicle for portraying their own communities.  She has in mind particularly Sayed Kashua and Attalah Mansoor.  The session would involve close reading of several texts.

Ersi Sotiropoulos艾瑞希·索提罗布洛斯

Chinese authors have written many detective stories and mysteries that are set in contemporary China, but few of these are available to readers who only know languages such as English and French.  More numerous are detective stories that explore contemporary Chinese society (and, by reflection, American and European societies) that have been written in English.  These mysteries are lively, genuine "page-turners," and they are an important source of information to foreign readers about China and above all its dramatic economic and social development since the 1990s.  The authors are more interested in China's hyperdevelopment in recent years than in Chinese crime; China's crime rate is low, and mysteries after all bring the reader into a new "world" of experience, but are rarely "realistic" in any theoretical sense. China is the real interest.
