British intellectual history is characterized by the trend of liberalism, which originates in the late 16th century. However, as Britain stepped into the 20th century, its intellectual map was transformed with the rise of varied social thoughts as responses to the tremendous changes in the society. The lecture will interpret the developments on the intellectual history from 1950 to 2017 with analysis of the representative writings during the period.

成立于1952年，是中国最早成立的现代大型民族乐团。一直以风格鲜明、演奏精湛而著称，在中国民族音乐发展历程中，始终占有举足轻重的地位。曾经涌现了张子谦、陆春龄、孙裕德、顾冠仁、闵惠芬、俞逊发、龚一等一批声誉卓著、对民族音乐发展做出重大贡献的艺术家。
经过半个多世纪的发展历程，上海民族乐团已经成为一支拥有拉弦、弹拨、吹管及打击乐四个声部全编制的大型民族管弦乐团，创建了自己的专业演出季，录制了大量的民族器乐专辑唱片。与此同时，乐团还推出了许多公益性演出，为普及中国民族音乐不断作出努力。
立足上海这个国际大都市，乐团将海纳百川、兼容并蓄的理念融入创作和演出中，以“传承千年文脉、致力当代发展、彰显海派风格”为主旨，委约创作了多部当代新作，成为新时代的经典民乐作品；策划演出了多台主题音乐会，将民族文化、民族情感、民族精神融入音乐中，展现海派民乐的当代表达。其中，音乐现场《海上生民乐》，成为第十八届上海国际艺术节开幕式演出。
乐团艺术家们的足迹遍及全国和世界几十个国家和地区，所到之处均得到高度的评价和赞誉。乐团曾受邀参与2006年上海合作组织峰会、东盟峰会、2007年特殊奥林匹克运动会、2010年中国上海世博会上海周、 2014亚信峰会等系列重要演出，并为众多来访的外国元首和政府首脑演出，被赞誉为“最优美的中国乐团”。

3. Topics in IC Research 1: Intergroup Communication Approaches (3rd offering)
Instructor: Prof. Dr. Yan Bing Zhang, University of Kansas, USA
Course Description: This course is designed to expose students to important and influential international topics in intercultural and/or cross-cultural interpersonal, intergroup, mass communication. The role and mission of a communication scholar are to examine human symbolic activity as it shapes and is shaped by relationships, institutions, and societies. This work concerns the creation, analysis, and critique of messages, and devotes particular attention to understanding the ways in which communication sustains and erodes collaboration within and among local, national, and global communities.
These 3-4 sessions will focus on the Contact Hypothesis, Intergroup Contact Theory, and Anxiety/ Uncertainty Management. This course is largely “social scientific,” covering material from communication, social cognition, and social psychology (rather than rhetoric). We will briefly touch on social identity, identity processes, stereotypes, intergroup communication, communication accommodation, and intergroup contact to demonstrate the manner in which communication both affects and reflects our social group memberships. The objective is to provide students with the theoretical foundation to view various contexts of communication through an “intergroup lens,” to enhance their skills to both research and critically evaluate historical, present, and future social issues associated with intergroup and intercultural relations.. By social groups we mean large-scale groups: those where you might identify with somebody else because they are a co-member of a group, even if strangers. Of special interest will be cultural and age groups, though sessions will discuss all kinds of different groups.
The recommended articles seek to accomplish three objectives: 1). Students are exposed to research in one corner of intergroup and intercultural communication; 2). Students will familiarize themselves with the structure of typical journal articles using quantitative research methodology; and 3) Students will learn about the details regarding the conceptualization and operationalization of major constructs examined in each of the journal articles, some through groups; The focus of this group work is demonstrating the integration of theory, research design, and measurements (and explaining basic data analysis).

Instructors: Dr. Inge van de Ven & Dr. Tom van Neunen, Tilburg University, Netherlands
Course Description: A key strategy for scholars in the humanities is the close reading of cultural objects: reading to uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension. Close reading involves carefully reading and reflecting on a cultural object, in which we pay special attention to things like characterization, the pace of the plot, the symbolism and imagery found throughout a work. It can also be put to use to uncover and engage critically with power relations that are inherent to each cultural object.
The current digitization of old texts and imagery, and the birth of a whole range of new, digitally native genres, however, poses new questions for the practice of close reading. This is exacerbated in the context of big data and superdiversity, in which it seems increasingly problematic to make inductive statements based on the contingent cultural objects that we study. It simply isn’t possible to read everything. Distant reading, in this context, refers to a reading method that relies on computer programs. The strategy represents an attempt at utilizing big data analytics for the purposes of literary scholarship.
In this course, we investigate the possibilities and pitfalls of a negotiation between these two approaches, and compare the different types of knowledge they foster. Students get to apply both methods to a selected case study, the results of which are discussed in class.
