中国自古以“衣冠礼仪之邦”著称于世，中国古代服饰文化是在与外界相对隔离的封闭环境中，通过儒、释、道等不同文化形态相互融合而自发形成的独立文化体系。其以中原地区汉民族具有农耕文化特征的服饰为主体，在漫长的历史演变中不断吸取北方游牧民族服饰形式，加以补充和融合而来。其不仅具有珠玉璀璨、文采缤纷的外在之美，也具有表德劝善、文以载道的深厚文化内涵。

Writing is more than an indispensable part of presenting our research results. It is a process of constructing our understandings of social, cultural, and linguistic studies. We can be partly trained as good writers and qualified scholars by practicing writing and revising.

Are there any techniques or tricks involved in writing and publishing in the English language for the most competitive and intellectually vibrant journals? How can we improve a first draft and revise it so that it becomes fully publishable? Are there specific procedures that would help us to achieve this goal?

In this writing workshop, Prof. Michael will guide us as we revise draft papers and learn the skills of academic writing in English for anthropologists and other cultural specialists.

Directed by Prof. Michael (Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences, Harvard University, and Chang Jiang Scholar, SISU) and Dr. Yu Hua (SISU), the workshop consists of two parts:

18-19 August

The first session will be a supervised ethnographic writing workshop.

21-22 August

The second session is designed for faculty members and advanced graduate students who intend to bring their written work for discussion and critique .

20 August

Between the two sessions, there will be a one-day break (20 August), during which we will hold an informal round-table discussion as part of the workshop; one section of this will specifically address participants’ fears of venturing into the unknown territory of English-language publication and will provide advice on calming and overcoming those fears.

汉语的连读变调规则因其复杂性、语音上的任意性及其众多的变异与例外对音系理论提出了重要的挑战。本人认为以实验方法来观察母语者的变调行为能够促进连读变调音系机制的研究发展。本讲座集中讨论对三个汉语方言（台湾闽南话、上海话、无锡话）中的变调规则的wug测试。其结果表明无法用表层配列规则激发的变调规则经常不被运用在新词中，而表层透明的变调规则则具有更高的能产性。这些发现说明这两类变调在音系语法中的根本机制是不同的，而这一结论很难由这些变调规则在其方言词汇中的规律而得出。

Chinese tone sandhi patterns pose significant challenges to phonological theory due to their complexity, phonetic arbitrariness, and rampant variation and exceptions in the lexicon. I argue in this talk that progress in our understanding of the grammatical nature of tone sandhi can be better made by experimental methods that investigate native speakers’ tone sandhi behavior. I focus on findings from wug tests on three Chinese dialects (Taiwanese Southern Min, Shanghai, Wuxi) here, which showed that tone sandhi patterns that are not motivated by surface phonotactics often categorically fail to apply in novel words, while phonologically transparent sandhi patterns are more productive. These findings suggest that the phonological nature of the two types of sandhi is different — a conclusion not easily drawn from the lexical patterns of tone sandhi in these dialects.

Huangyan dialect (黄岩话) is a variety of Taizhou dialect (台州话) as spoken in the province of Zhejiang. It is a rather underdocumented dialect but it was mentioned in Chao’s (1928) investigation into Wu dialects as having a special feature in certain rhymes “giving the impression there was a glottal stop in the middle”. We investigate the sound and tonal inventory of Huangyan Taizhou, paying special attention to (1) the feature Chao observed and (2) to the apparently strong tendency in this dialect to co-articulate the onset consonant with the following vowel. Extreme co-articulation surfaces as fricative vowels, nasalized vowels and syllabic nasals. Moreover, frication of vowels and nasal syllabification affect more consonant-vowel sequences than observed in other dialects.

This presentation is designed to provide faculty members, instructors, students and others in the field of higher education with some useful techniques regarding how to improve instructional practices and enhance student learning. The presentation, which includes video clips from several popular movies, focuses on two sets of skills: (a) effective instructional planning practices that instructors can engage in before and after teaching their classes, and (b) in-class instructional strategies that instructors can employ to increase student motivation and positively affect student learning and student attitudes. Those attending the presentation, which has been delivered at dozens of universities worldwide, are likely to find it both informative and enjoyable.

During this presentation, some recent innovations in the field of educational technology (e.g., mobile learning, gaming, social media, online learning, etc.) will be discussed. The speaker will present some data to show the extent to which each innovation is being used in various settings (k-12, higher education, and businesses), and he will discuss some challenges these innovations present for instructional designers.
