Drawing on 25 years working in New York City and referring specifically to her experience teaching and overseeing the NYU master’s program in translation, Prof. Julie Tay will provide a survey of recent trends and developmenting translation, highlighting some unique characteristics of the U.S. market and explore the range of opportunities and challenges pertaining to Chinese translators and interpreters working in N. America. This will be an informal discussion with ample time for students and faculty to pose comments and ask questions.

The UK higher education sector is one of the most internationalised in the world. The UK is the second most popular destination for students wishing to pursue their higher education studies abroad, and it is the leading provider of transnational education (TNE), that is higher education programmes offered outside the national borders. China is by far the main sending country of international students in the UK and the second largest host country of UK TNE. This lecture will look at what the internationalisation of UK higher education means for its quality assurance. It will outline the role and main areas of work of the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), focusing on how it is responding to the internationalisation of UK higher education both at home and overseas. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of strengthening cooperation amongst quality assurance agencies in sending and receiving countries of TNE in order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its quality assurance. The leading role played by QAA internationally in this area will be outlined, presenting a number of current initiatives aimed at fostering and facilitating cross-border cooperation in the quality assurance of TNE, including Chinese-UK cooperation in running schools and programmes.

“阶级”并不是英国社会独有的产物，但却以英国阶级文化最为典型。英国人对阶级的持守如对大英帝国的骄傲一般，在英国人的意识形态领域根深蒂固。《唐顿庄园》上映后，坊间一度传闻这是卡梅伦政府在呼唤人们对保守党执政时代荣光的怀念，然而随着这部围绕贵族生活展开的电视片，英国阶级之间深刻的差异再次呈现在观众眼前，并得到许多关注。如今，贵族阶级主导社会文化的现象似乎离我们越来越远，取而代之的是在维多利亚时代摩拳擦掌、跃跃欲试着要领导这个国家的新生阶层。他们创造财富，改革陋习，引领风尚，塑造了独特的中产阶级文化风景，成为了真正的阶级代言人。围绕他们，英国人打造了一系列道德准则，可供年轻人效仿，并留下了一系列丰富的阶级文化遗产。

在全球化的时代，毫无疑问，西方文化意识形态就目前而言依然是现代文明的主导意识形态。如果我们深入辨别，不难发现，英美文化意识形态是现代文明意识形态的决定性因素，其最为重要的特征是分析理性、契约精神与商品意识形态。因此，英美等国虽然在绝对国家力量上早已不可遏阻地走向相对衰落，但是，在国际政治话语权中依然具有广泛的影响力。

时至今日，基于历史原因与现实需要，英美国别研究始终是我国开展区域国别研究的重要内容。然而，在错综复杂的国际新旧秩序交迭更替的全新时代，如何真正做到立足自我，以我为主，从基础研究、应用研究与对策研究等不同方面开展切实有效的英美国别研究，是我们必须认真思考的理论问题。

要回应以上主题，至少有以下三点原则是我们必须认真遵循的：其一，必须立足自我，从当今国际社会文化的发展趋势与中国的社会现实出发，具有非常清晰明确的实际问题意识；第二，必须时刻不忘从文化比较的视角，在具体的历史语境与国情语境中开展有益的对象国研究，以对话的方式，以互鉴的视角才能通达问题的根本；第三，一定要高度强调历史修养的重要意义。许多当下现实具体问题，需要以更为宽广的历史视野加以审视，一些当下晦暗不明的问题，在历史经验中早就给出明确的解答了。研究历史，是我们自信与动力的源泉。
