内容提要

语言管理是社会语言学或语言政策及规划学科的一个分支，学界对它的研究历史不长，国际上对语言管理研究得比较好的国家有捷克、澳大利亚、以色列、美国和日本等。我国学界对语言管理的研究甚少，为此，本讲座主要围绕“什么是语言管理？”、“语言管理有什么特点？”、“语言能管理吗？”、“语言需要管理吗？”以及“如何看待语言管理？”五个基本问题展开分析和讨论，以便让更多的国人了解和参与语言管理的研究和实践，进而为我国语言政策的制定以及语言生活的管理提供更多的理论依据和实践参考。

Cultural Adaptation and Coping Strategies: Applying the Cultural Fit Hypothesis

While research on coping and intercultural adaptation typically suggests that one who manages stress effectively will generally have higher adaptation, few studies have examined the efficacy and fit of coping strategies within the cultural context. Some studies have indicated primary coping to be most effective during intercultural transitions but these studies have been conducted in western contexts, while other studies have suggested that secondary coping is more prominent and effective in Asian or collectivistic cultures. Situated in the stress and coping framework lies the notion that during transitions individuals attempt to fit themselves in their new cultural context. As individuals move to a new culture, a new set of ways in which individuals need to manage stress are employed. Therefore, the present dissertation attempts to answer the question: how will individuals adapt coping to match their new sociocultural environment? To examine the adaptive functions of coping within cultural contexts, the present dissertation examines the adaptation process of Chinese participants (n=1872) and international students in China (n=250) across 5 research studies。

Social Anthropology is a humanistic discipline located within the Social Sciences. As such, it provides a means of exploring culture as a global and comparative phenomenon, and of examining the linkages between culture and society. It offers a powerful critique of racism and all other forms of social and cultural intolerance and a valuable critical perspective on the role of power in a wide range of topics: gender, local governance, the promotion and preservation of heritage, ethnic relations, and property issues, to name just a few. The speaker has done research in southern Europe (Greece and Italy) and southeast Asia (Thailand) and thus has a comparative perspective, which he will use to illustrate the talk. He will suggest that Social Anthropology, even for those who are not contemplating careers in this field, can be a rich source of humane understanding and a bridge between the other social sciences and the artistic and literary disciplines.
