Prof Yan Bing will focus on “social scientific” approaches to research (e.g., survey design and content analysis) in communication studies, including consideration of basic principles in research design, methods of observation and measurement, and application of appropriate statistical techniques. Strengths and weaknesses of experimentation, survey and content analysis will be addressed. Yan Bing will encourage questions from the audience from design to publication. She will also share her personal experience about publishing her work. Students can expect hands on experience with survey design, data collection, and data analysis in testing some simple theory based hypotheses.
Day 1 (10/26) : Allport’s Contact Hypothesis, Intergroup Contact Theory, and Anxiety Management: Conceptualization and Operationalization.
1. Presentation on the Research Process
2. Survey Design
3. Presentation and Discussion on Mediation and Moderation
4. Questions from Students
5. Presentation and Discussion on Intergroup Contact Theory
6. Visualize Intergroup Contact Using Figures
7. Presentation and discussion on Communication Accommodation Theory
8. Visualize Communication Accommodation Theory Using Figures
Day 2 (10/27) : Identifying Major Variables in Intergroup Contact Research: Moving from Independent and Dependent Variables and Examining the Mediating and Moderating Mechanisms
1. Student Presentation and Discussion: Mediated and Direct Contact and Intercultural Relations
2. Student Presentation and Discussion: Contact, Non-accommodation and Intergenerational Relations
3. Specific Measurement Scales Used in a series of Research Projects (Participants are encouraged to bring their own to share). Emphasis of the importance of instructions to participants (as needed)
4. Mediation and Moderation in the articles
5. How did the studies moved from theory, literature review, hypothesis development, data collection, analysis and discussion. Revisit with the research models.
