In second language acquisition research, the acquisition criterion is a fundamental issue. The conclusions drawn on the success of learning or lack of, or on the sequence in which x, y, z is acquired, are invariably based on the acquisition criterion. In this talk, I will critically discuss two acquisition criteria: the accuracy criterion and the emergence criterion. I will outline their theoretical bases and practical applications, with a particular focus on the emergence criterion.

PT (Pienemann 1998) is concerned with the developmental problem of a foreign language (L2). It aims to predict, describe, and explain the way the L2 grammatical system unfolds during the learning process. In this talk, I will present the conceptual framework of PT, including its theoretical background, its speech production model, its processing procedures, and its L2 developmental hierarchy for (English) morphology and syntax. I will also (briefly) discuss the methodology issues associated with PT-based research, as well as pedagogical implications.
