Session 7: Designing Methodologies: Details of Yours and Mine
We will go through the process of designing multiple methodologies for actual pro-posed hypotheses from attendees and hypothetical studies resulting from brainstorm-ing. We also will talk about planning in advance for statistical analysis and other data analysis, specifically how complex data analysis is used to test hypotheses and answer research questions.

Session 8: Writing Conclusion (and Discussion) Sections the Right Way
Many, perhaps most, social scientists around the world do not know how to best handle writing Discussion and Conclusion sections of papers and articles. In fact, many simply do it badly and therefore uselessly. This session is about how to do it right, tying Hs/RQs results (not data) back to literature review and only Discussing when you have something that needs discussing.

Session 6: Bringing It Together: Choosing Methodology Based on Theory & Topic
Choosing methodologies based on the topic, theory, and practical considerations. Critiquing others’ methodology choices and methodology designs. Alternatives.

Section 5: The Fun—and Hard—Part: Designing methodologies, Part II
Designing methodologies: surveys, depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography, case studies, historical research, secondary analysis. Pros and cons of each. Critiquing your and others’ methodologies through the lens of internal validity, external validity, etc. Triangulation. No methodology is perfect, so how good is good enough?

Session 4: The Fun—and Hard—Part: Designing methodologies, Part I
Designing content analysis, textual analysis, controlled experiments, field experiments, that are tightly based on your hypotheses/RQs. Pros and cons of each. Critiquing your and others’ methodologies through the lens of internal validity, external validity and reliability.

Session 2: Literature Reviews: The Foundation of Everything Else.
This session is about strategizing for compiling the literature review, organizing the literature review by section and within sections, writing the literature review, with exercises in writing a literature review and critiquing others’ literature reviews in detail and overall.

Session 3: : How Do I Get Here? Writing Theory-Driven Hypotheses
Writing hypotheses and/or research questions strictly based on the literature review. Independent and dependent variables. Operational definitions. Writing theory-driven hypotheses/RQs. Critiquing others’ hypotheses and research questions.

Session 1: Where Do I Start?
This session focuses on picking research topics, and narrowing or broadening them through literature review. We consider theoretical importance, practical importance and application, personal interest, and other tangible and intangible considerations. We will go through brainstorming exercises in class, also consider others’ research agendas and starting considering what kind of topics and questions are related to which theories?

正当启蒙运动如日中天之际，卢梭对启蒙运动乃至一般而言的科学与艺术持批评态度，这是卢梭留给他的同时代人甚至是当代人的最初印象。实际上，卢梭并非质疑科学和艺术本身，而是质疑它们带给道德和风俗的影响。卢梭是怎样展开他的论证的？他批评文明社会与文明人的理据是什么？科学和艺术到底能否与道德相容？这是我们需要跟随卢梭一起思考的问题。

著名史家塔西佗既倾倒于罗马政治的伟大，又深恶痛绝于帝国之下的败坏与放纵。在《阿古利可拉传》中他写道：“在我们这个时代中，风气之浊如此，对美德之冷消如此”他斥责在专制统治下对人民的奴役和对自由的剥夺。他说：“的确，我们已经充分证明的我们的柔顺屈服；如果说我们的先人亲眼见过极度放纵的自由，那么，我们真是处在极度奴役之下。我们的‘告密人’已经连我们说话和听话的权利都给剥夺了。如果健忘能够像沉默一般的容易，那么，我们会把记忆和语言都同样的抛掉。”
讲述罗马对不列颠统治的《阿古利可拉传》，笔锋犀利，直指要害，像一柄刺刀挑开罗马帝国政治的沉疴痼疾，又像一首华丽隽永的赞美诗，颂扬不列颠人这一“蛮族”的勇于战斗生气勃勃。
罗马政治之伟大与深层问题，二者必须同时关注，透过著名史家塔西佗来看罗马政治，更是上上之选。就让我们一起，跟从吴一笛老师的步伐，打开塔西佗现存五部作品之一的《阿古利可拉传》，探索其中包含着什么样的罗马政治与史家教诲。
