由上海外国语大学与乌兹别克斯坦共和国撒马尔罕外国语学院共同举办的“伟大丝绸之路上的多元价值观:语言、文化和教育”国际学术研讨会已经成功举办了三届。2018年11月16-17日,第四届“伟大丝绸之路上的多元价值观:语言、文化和教育”国际学术研讨会将在上海外国语大学举行。本次会议的主题是“一带一路”沿线国家的语言、文化和教育研究。

Following the publication of Jane Bennet’s “Vibrant Matter: a political ecology of things” (2009) much more attention has been given to the role of non-human agents, stage properties and new technologies in the visual and performing arts. Some of this thinking has been around the dramatic and performative qualities of non-human forms such as puppets, performing animals and things that change and transform the artistic experience. Theatre scholars have connected this to a range of critical theories and contexts including new media dramaturgy, theatre and ecology, and affect and spectatorship. My lecture will examine these notions in relation to recent performance works and argue for the need for theatre to connect to themes of ecology and posthumanism.

The lecture begins with an examination of the Italian poet Francis Petrarch (1304-1374) and the formation of the poetic convention known as Petrarchism from his posthumous influence all over Europe, and moves on to a close reading of selected poems of English poets, from William Shakespeare to W. B. Yeats, which displays how later poets confront, inherit and react to Petrarchism in their respective creative pursuit.

Students are invited to join the speaker in a close reading of selected poems on poetry from English and American poets, including Philip Sidney, Robert Herrick, George Herbert, Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, and Archibald MacLeish, after which a few poems from Tao Yuanming, Xin Qiji and Paul Verlaine will be discussed to demonstrate how the meta-poetic provides a universal attraction in the poet’s exploration of artistic possibilities.
