Reflexivity: Dialogic Dimensions for Individuals and Teams

内容提要

This talk considers different dimensions of reflexivity, concentrating on dialogic processes in qualitative research and analysis. My research has mostly been related to TESOL teacher education and I want to begin with some admittedly ‘personal’ key distinctions, incorporating some contributions made by Julian Edge in his 2011 book.. Drawing on the recently published ‘Reflexivity in Applied Linguistics’ (Consoli and Ganassin, 2023), the talk will clarify key distinctions and argue for a balanced approach to the reflexive enterprise.

The talk will include data from qualitative interviewing (using extracts from my 2016 book ‘The research interview. Reflective practice and reflexivity in research processes’.) Here we will consider how aspects of identity are negotiated and constructed in talk and how this can become an important dimension of reflexive inquiry. In particular, I want to make clear how other’s reflexivity can help you and you students to make sense of your own analytic and reflexive framework. This is one of the reasons why being transparent and being reflexive in your work helps other researchers with their projects.

The talk will also consider how reflexivity in research projects needs to consider ‘team reflexivity’ and move beyond the individual frame, especially in collaborative analytic processes. This will involve opening up both the discourses of reflexivity and its representation within research.

美国社会语言变异研究中的社会意义:历史与未来

Social meaning in the history and future of sociolinguistic variation in the US

Technological advances have allowed the study of sociolinguistic variation to embrace larger and more diverse populations in greater detail and over time, while ethnographic studies have brought attention to the local social meaning of variation. These ethnographic insights in turn are being explored in large data sets.  At the same time, semanticists have become increasingly engaged with social meaning, presenting the challenge of bringing together semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology into a unified theory of meaning. The result is a greater integration of sociolinguistics with linguistic theory on the one hand, and anthropology on the other. This talk will briefly recount these developments since the founding work in variation, and explore the challenge that lies before us.

大都市的新接触方言研究:以伦敦为例

Researching new contact dialects in metropolitan cities: the example of London

In North-west European cities, new varieties of established languages have emerged in the past 40 years, following rapid migration. Arrivals from other countries acquire local languages with varying levels of fluency, while their children acquire something like ‘native’ proficiency. It is these (young) people’s speech that is in focus. To varying degrees, these speakers’ varieties differ structurally from the established varieties, and the obvious question arises as to the mechanisms behind these changes.

My case study deals with Multicultural London English (MLE; Cheshire, Kerswill, Fox & Torgersen 2011). I take a broadly contact linguistics approach, coupled with an evaluation of the relevance of demography, population history and culture (Kerswill & Torgersen 2021). A striking fact about MLE is the importance of vocabulary originating from Jamaican Patois. This reflects the role of the post-World War II African Caribbean immigrants as the founders of a new London youth culture, reflected in the rise of Caribbean-influenced language and music. On the language side, this development is very much in line with Mufwene’s Founder Effect (Mufwene 1996), which argues that a founding population has a disproportionate influence on the developing dialect compared to later arrivals.

MLE has been described as a ‘multiethnolect’, a variety used in a community with many different language backgrounds. In the last 30 years, social and political developments have allowed the emergence of stronger, more visible Black identities in Britain. A concomitant of this has been the hotly debated claim that there is a distinctive Black British English (BBE), which contains the features of MLE but in a more consistent form. I wind the lecture up by showing how both these positions – MLE as BBE and MLE as a multiethnolect – can be reconciled.

人物简介

Penelope Eckert

Penelope Eckert (born 1942) is Albert Ray Lang Professor Emerita of Linguistics at Stanford University. She specializes in variationist sociolinguistics and is the author of several scholarly works on language and gender. She served as the president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2018.Her early work was on sound change and language shift in a Gascon-speaking village in the French Pyrenees. In recent decades, she has carried out ethnographic studies of the embedding of variation in social practice among American preadolescents and adolescents. Her work seeks out the relation between the indexical use of variation at the local level and the patterning of variation at the macro-sociological level. She examines the meaning of variation through its use in stylistic practice, approaching variation as a robust semiotic system that draws on a wide range of linguistic material for the non-propositional expression of social meaning. She is author of Jocks and Burnouts: Social Identity in the High School, (Teachers College Press 1989), Linguistic Variation as Social Practice (Blackwell 2000), Language and Gender (Cambridge University Press 2003, Second Edition 2013 with Sally McConnell-Ginet), and Meaning and Linguistic Variation: The Third Wave in Sociolinguistics (Cambridge University Press 2018).

Paul Kerswill

Paul Edward Kerswill is professor of sociolinguistics at the Department of Language and Linguistic Science of the University of York. He completed his bachelor, master and doctoral degree at Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University. His research is in language variation and change, with an emphasis on phonetic but also grammatical and discourse variation. In July 2017, Kerswill was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and social sciences. His editorial duties include co-editorship for the book series Studies in Language Variation and Change published by John Benjamins Publishing Company, and the Edinburgh Sociolinguistics series by Edinburgh University Press.
