I started working on intercultural sensitivity (IC) about 33 years ago, and have continued to work on the construct and its measurement. I will explain how I came to choose the topic, and how the research venture started, developed, and got constrained. I will explain how intercultural training can enrich the conceptualization of IC. I will also discuss how IC is developed experientially during our life journey through self-reflection and without external interventions. I will discuss the philosophical foundations of IC by presenting the upaniSadic wisdom "I am the Universe," and how it prevents otherization, a necessary foundation for the perceptual distortion that calls for IC. I will also discuss how lokasaMgraha, ethics of care, and categorical imperative enrich our understanding of IC in a fundamental way. I hope this talk will help start a dialogue about not only how IC can be reconceptualized and measured, but also how we can think about it from indigenous perspectives in ancient cultures like China and India.
