In this presentation, Simon Nelson will discuss the trends impacting education today, asks what this means for the higher and further education sectors, and explains the role that online education can, and should, play in this new world.Education is changing. As our societies adapt to the constantly evolving digital landscape so too does education. The transformative impact of digital technologies and the emergence of new online educational models is not limited by national boundaries. But this new global online higher education eco-system is both an opportunity and a threat. Most traditional universities would have us believe that a “real education” still takes place on-campus, in-class. In the meantime, more innovative universities and new commercial providers scramble to meet increasing demand from industry partners and students themselves for flexible learning, which develops work-ready skills for the 21st Century. Research suggests that jobs for life are a thing of the past, replaced by the gig economy and shorter stints in one role or one company for most employees. This reality, in addition to the widely reported digital skills gap as well as ,the threat of automation is resulting in businesses, governments and individuals seeking new ways to reskill and upskill. Online education may come with grand challenges, and has its critics, yet it presents huge opportunities for bridging skills gaps, sector sustainability and opening access to transformative life-long learning on a global scale.
