Marx is widely interpreted as having predicted that communism would arise as a consequence of the collapse of advanced capitalism. Although the world has experienced several transitions to communism, no advanced capitalist society has been transformed into a communist state, and several former communist countries have officially abandoned communism. In this talk I shall consider whether Marx did, in fact, make a general prediction about the coming of communism and the consequences for his theory given the facts of history since his death.
