As part of the SISU Intercultural Institute’s (SII) national Foreign Expert Bureau funded High-End Team (Gaoduan Waiguo Zhuanjia) Project, Professor Dharm Bhawuk has once again returned to campus December 21-31 to give lectures, consult on research projects, advise doctoral and MA students and continue to help train our faculty and students in cross-cultural research design and operationalization.
This Saturday, he will help host a “Research in Progress” Forum, along with Profs. Steve J. Kulich and Zhang Hongling and other IC Faculty Members. The Forum will commence at 8:00 in the Library 604 Seminar Room and will include several official PhD Thesis Proposal Defenses (Boshi Lunwen Kaiti Baogao), and an MA Thesis Defense in the morning, followed by an afternoon of Research reports and mock-defenses. Prof. Bhawuk and the faculty team will respond to each student presentation, raise important points of concern or interest regarding research design and implementation, and discuss issues related to improving cross-cultural research processes and procedures. Those working on cross- or intercultural research papers are welcome to attend.
Overview of the “Research in Progress” Forum:
(1) 8:00 Forum Launch: Prof. Dharm Bhawuk and Steve Kulich opening remarks
(2) MORNING 8:15-12:00 Official Thesis Proposal and Defence Procedures
2 PhD candidates will present their research proposals (Kaiti Baogao, each 1 hour)
1 MA candidate will present her Thesis Defense (Lunwen Dabian)
(3) AFTERNOON: 1:00-3:40 Practice “Research Reports” Workshop
Professors Bhawuk, Zhang Hongling, Wang Yi’an, Alex English and others will preside over several PhD Research Reports or MA Mock Proposals including group discussion
(4) 3:40-4:00 Forum Closing: Remarks and Recommendations: Prof. Bhawuk

This talk will first introduce the concept of soft power, how it has been embraced by politicians and academics around the world, and the debates around it. It then goes on to examine China’s (cultural) soft power, its practice, its reception, opportunities and challenges. By introducing the various debates around the concept and by giving examples for illustrating the speakers’ argument, the talk aims to advance listeners’ knowledge of the concept at both the theoretical and empirical levels.

Inefficiencies associated with online information search are becoming increasingly prevalent in digital environments due to a surge in Consumer Generated Content (CGC). Despite growing scholarly interest in investigating users’ information search behavior in CGC environments, there is a paucity of studies that explores the phenomenon from a theory-guided angle. Drawing on Information Foraging Theory (IFT), we re-conceptualize online information search as a form of adaptive user behavior in response to system design constraints. Through this theoretical lens, we advanced separate taxonomies for online information search tactics and strategies, both of which constitute essential building blocks of the search process. Furthermore, we construct a research framework that bridges the gap between online information search tactics and strategies by articulating how technology-enabled search tactics contribute to the fulfillment of strategic search goals. Subsequently, our research framework was validated via an online experiment in which Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) participants were recruited and tasked to perform searches on custom-made online review websites, which are modeled after their actual counterpart and populated with real review data of restaurants. Empirical findings reveal that the provision of different search features engenders distinct search tactics, thereby exposing users to varying levels of search determination control and search manipulation control. In turn, both types of search controls affects users’ result anticipation and search costs, which when combined, determine the efficiency of goal-oriented search strategy and the utility of exploratory search strategy.

Impulse buying is rapidly becoming the predominant engine for revenue generation in digital environments due to the emerging technological capabilities in tailoring persuasive messages to match the specific context in which a consumer is situated at any given moment. Yet, despite a long history of research into impulsive buying, there is neither a strong theoretical framework to explain how impulse buying behavior manifests nor is there ample consideration being accorded to the role of technology in driving such behavior. To this end, we build on the Self-Regulation Theory (SRT) to advance a Theory of Technology-Driven Impulse Buying that posits how technological stimuli in the form of contextualized triggers and transaction support can inspire impulse buying behavior. The model was subsequently validated in the context of in-app purchase by surveying existing users of mobile applications. Based on our data analysis, a majority of hypothesized relationships were corroborated by the empirical evidence, thereby lending credibility to the applicability of our proposed theory in eliciting salient technological drivers of impulse buying within digital environments.
