Intercultural competence is gaining visibility and importance on American university campuses, and leading institutions such as Purdue and Ohio State are implementing programs that aim to develop competence in all students, regardless of major. These and initiatives at other large institutions are notable and indicate a steadily growing awareness of the importance of intercultural competence among other career competencies. Learning outcomes in this area, previously very general and poorly-defined, are now becoming more specific and assessable. Indeed, assessment is the newest area of emphasis.
But are these initiatives being crafted in light of the larger global context for which they claim to prepare graduates? What are the key challenges that young professionals and veterans alike need to recognize and negotiate in order to be successful in this global economy? This presentation interrogates current US efforts to develop intercultural competence by situating them in the context of a rapidly changing international environment. It suggests that competence not only requires interpersonal skills and awareness but also demands insight into and openness toward larger and evolving social and market characteristics that frame intercultural activity.

跨文化能力在美国大学有着越来越明显的重要地位。普渡大学俄亥俄州立大学都正实施这个项目，旨在提高各个专业学生的能力。在其他机构中，这些方案也备受关注，这说明了同其他职业能力相比，跨文化能力越来越受瞩目。这个领域的成果之前的定义非常宽泛，现在正变得越来越具体并且可以测量。事实上，评估是我们最新的侧重领域。

汉语修辞学的学科属性存在语言与言语之争。本研究认为，修辞学研究应该超越语言或言语的界域，以其上位的“言语活动”为对象。从符号学观点看，修辞是对语言符号的运用，这种运用又构成了另一个层级的符号，即修辞符号。语言符号是静态符号，修辞符号则是动态符号。语言符号用来交际时就负载了特定交际内容，于是就成了修辞符号的能指，即“修辞形式”，而特定的交际内容便是修辞符号的所指，即“修辞意义”。修辞，就是言语主体借助修辞形式在语境作用下生成修辞意义以有效实现修辞旨意的言语活动。修辞学的任务正是研究这种活动的规律。

英国研究中心系列讲座第65讲
2016年是莎士比亚逝世五百周年。对于后人而言，尊重一位伟大思想家的方式不是去顶礼膜拜，而是与他一起思考。《哈姆雷特》（Hamlet）以剧中人物哈姆莱特（丹麦王侄—王子）命名，世界范围内围绕哈姆莱特与《哈姆雷特》的研究不可胜数。分析剧中人物关系是理解戏剧主题与结构的基本前提，人们往往注意到哈姆莱特与叔父国王（丹麦）、小福丁布拉斯（Fortinbras）与叔父国王（挪威）这两条叔侄线索，而恰恰是易被忽略的挪威王侄与丹麦国王的隐匿关系。本次讲座旨在探究这条线索，通过这种关系理解并试图揭示出《哈姆雷特》中的政治原则及其争论。

英国研究中心系列讲座第64讲
17世纪50年代的英国共和主义思想家是英国自由帝国思想的最早阐述者。他们用马基雅维利式的古典共和主义语言和当时的清教主义语言描述了对扩张性共和国与自由帝国的向往和仰慕。他们始终把想象中的罗马共和国当作扩张性共和国与自由帝国的理想模型，希望英国也能取得罗马那样的丰功伟绩，建立世界帝国、传播自由、伸张正义。他们一方面厌恶残余议会统治下的英格兰共和国，一方面又热诚支持它的海外扩张，并积极为获取和管理被征服的领土出谋划策。他们在英国海外扩张尚处于起步阶段之时进行了理论建构，论证了海外扩张的必要性、合理性和合法性。他们所构想的融合了古典共和主义传统与清教救世主义情结的自由帝国理想成为日后英国自由帝国思想进一步发展的基础。

从语言幽默、谎言、法律语言、政治语言、儿童语言、教材语言、国家与机构修辞、实验修辞学、案例库修辞学直到“语气系统”的重新分析、“话语标记”的重新认识等等都是语言运用的重要课题，可是，这一系列课题如何展开？彼此又如何联系？又能否用一个统一的理论模型加以推导？这便是演讲者所要回答的核心问题。

Phonetic category formation refers to the processes by which bilingual or second language (L2) speakers come to distinguish phonetic details of shared phonemes in each language (Flege, 1995). For example, Spanish and English share the phoneme /p/, but /p/ in each language is produced with different voice-onset-time (VOT) values. Thus, it is an interesting question whether bilingual or L2 speakers exhibit accurate phonetic realizations of Spanish /p/ and English /p/ when speaking the two languages. While phonetic category formation has been investigated extensively in adult bilingual and L2 speakers, little research has been carried out with bilingual children. The main goal of this presentation is to address how phonetic categories are formed and developed in Korean-English bilingual children and to evaluate developmental patterns of speech production in the bilingual children. Stop and vowel production of four different age groups (3, 5, 7, and 10 years of age) of Korean-English bilingual children in the US were examined. The findings provide novel information that reports the developmental processes of phonetic category formation and its underlying mechanisms in bilingual children. This study was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (RHD061527A).
